Markings: The left side is marked “USE ONLY 30-378 WBY MAG. (WEATHERBY MAG.). The bottom of the barrel is marked “SD / 480”. The barrel has a temperature activated thermometer made from plastic, that is taped to the top of the barrel. The left side of the receiver is marked “MARK V / U.S. PATENT NO. 3,013,355 / Weatherby / ® / ATASCADERO, CA / MADE IN U.S.A.” The right side of the receiver is marked with the serial number. The scope is marked with “LEUPOLD” and the company logo, along with “LEUPOLD VARI-X III 8.5-25” with magnification references on the knurled zoom knob. The underside of the bolt handle is marked “480”. The trigger guard has a stylized “W”. The butt pad is marked “H-S PRECISION”.

Sights / Optics: The front sight is There is no provision for iron sights. The drilled and tapped receivers have a two piece Picatinny scope base and quick disconnect ring system. Housed in the rings is a Lupold 8.5-25 Vari-X III with a sunshade. The optics are clear and bright. There are no major marks or damage to the scope. The rings and scope rate in about Excellent condition.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The rifle has an H-S Precision aluminum bedded synthetic stock that has a textured surface for grip. It features a pistol grip and Monte Carlo stock. The stock has two holes for sling swivels (Provided are two quick disconnect sling swivels, but the swivel studs are not provided). The LOP measures 13-1/2” from the front of the trigger to the back of the semi-curved H-S Precision brand recoil pad. The pad has a black plastic spacer and proudly features the company name in the middle of the pad. The pad only has minor scuff marks. The stock rates in about Excellent overall condition.

Type of Finish: The barrel is polished stainless steel with what appears to be black phosphate in the fluted portions. The receiver is blued and the alloy trigger guard and magazine floor plate are matte black.

Finish Originality: All Original

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion. Our bore gauge gave a M.E. of 0.70.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 94% of its metal finish. The balance of the finish shows wear on the inside of the receiver and upper tang, resulting in finish loss. The bolt body has wear and light loss of finish. The barrel and receiver are free of major and highly visible blemishes. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are crisp. Overall, this rifle rates in about Excellent condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We have not fired this rifle.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle comes with a Leupold 8.5-25x40mm Vari-X III with quick disconnect scope rings on Picatinny scope bases. Also included is a Redding brand forming die set for 30-378 Weatherby Magnum. The end label says “Series : Custom”. The two dies are marked “REDDING 30/378 WBY TRIM 7L” and “REDDING 30/378 WBY FORM #1” and come in a green plastic factory box. A full length sizing die, seating die and neck sizing die are included in their factory box. They are marked “REDDING / 30/378 WBY FL 7D / NK 7C / ST 7D”. Two paper targets are included with notes of “30-378 Weatherby / 100 YDS / 1-30-99 SCOT” and “30-378 100 YDS / 11-1-98 / 180 ballistic silver tip”. The dies are in Excellent condition as photographed. The rifle comes with its original factory box. The end label is marked “AMM303 WR8B / B/ ITEM NUMBER B / SERIAL NUMBER / SB034480 / R/H 28” / 30.378 WBY MAG / 30.378 WBY MAG MK V / 28” / ACCUMARK / USA ACCUBRAKE”. The box proudly displays Weatherby’s logo and “MADE IN U.S.A.”The box has compressions, light losses on the edges and is lightly faded from time. It has a foam insert with two sling swivels all in Fine condition.

Our Assessment: This is a fine piece of American made Weatherby badassery. The stainless fluted barrel is hardly broken in and looks superb with the H-S Precision aluminum bedded stock. Mounted atop is a Leupold 8.5-25x40mm variable power Vari-X III scope with quick disconnect rings. Two boxes of reloading dies are included along with paper targets that were punished by this beast back in ’98 and ’99. The factory box, and foam insert are provided. A knurled thread protector, Accubrake muzzle break and torque bar are also provided. From Wikipedia: “The .30-378 Weatherby Magnum is a .30 caliber (small bore), belted, bottle-necked rifle cartridge. The cartridge was developed in response to a US Army military contract in 1959. While still unreleased to the public, the cartridge went on to set world records for accuracy including the first ten 10X in 1,000 yards (910 m) benchrest shooting. It is currently the fastest .30 caliber factory ammunition available.” This is a fantastic bench rest rifle that you can write your name with at a few hundred yards; it can also take most North American game.
